Information
International visitors traveling to Gulmarg must hold a valid Indian Tourist Visa or an e-Visa. Passports should have a minimum of six months validity from the date of departure. Foreign nationals may need to complete routine registration formalities at their hotel or at security checkpoints. Domestic travelers from within India do not require a visa but must carry a valid, government-issued photo ID (such as an Aadhar Card, Passport, or Voter ID) for hotel check-ins, Gondola boarding, and standard security procedures.
Gulmarg is synonymous with the Gulmarg Gondola—one of the highest and longest cable cars in the world. A ride on Phase 1 takes you to the beautiful Kongdoori Valley, while Phase 2 elevates you to the majestic Apharwat Peak, offering sweeping views of the Line of Control and the Nanga Parbat. During the winter months, Gulmarg is a global hotspot for skiing, snowboarding, and heli-skiing. In the summer, visitors can enjoy a round of golf at the Gulmarg Golf Course (the highest green golf course in the world), take a scenic pony ride to Strawberry Valley, or trek to the stunning, ice-clad Alpather Lake.
Gulmarg is a true year-round destination, and the best time to visit depends entirely on what you want to experience. For snow lovers, winter sports enthusiasts, and skiers, the prime season is from late December to early March. If you prefer pleasant weather, vibrant green landscapes, and blooming flowers, the summer months from April to June are perfect. Autumn (September to November) offers a crisp, cool climate with remarkably clear skies, providing the best unobstructed views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
Gulmarg is incredibly safe and welcoming, with local guides and instructors who are well-trained to assist tourists. The most important health consideration here is the high altitude. While the base of Gulmarg is comfortable for most, taking the Gondola to Phase 2 (Apharwat Peak) brings you to nearly 13,000 feet. It is highly recommended to ascend slowly, stay hydrated, and avoid heavy physical exertion at the top to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Due to the altitude and snow, UV rays are exceptionally strong, so high-SPF sunscreen and polarized sunglasses are absolute necessities. If visiting in winter, heavy thermal layers and waterproof boots are required; these can easily be rented from local vendors at the base.
